Annuities have a reputation problem. They're either sold as a miracle solution by aggressive salespeople, or dismissed as "too complicated" by people who've never looked closely at how they work. The truth is somewhere in the middle — and for a lot of Orange County retirees and pre-retirees, they're one of the most useful tools available.

This guide cuts through the noise. No jargon, no hype, no obligation.

What Is an Annuity?

An annuity is a contract between you and an insurance company. You put money in — either a lump sum or over time — and the company guarantees certain benefits in return. Those benefits depend on the type of annuity.

In the retirement context, annuities do two things that no other financial product can do simultaneously: protect your principal and guarantee you income you can't outlive.

FIA vs. MYGA — What's the Difference?

Fixed Indexed Annuity (FIA)

  • Growth tied to a market index (S&P 500, etc.)
  • Floor of 0% — you can't lose principal
  • Higher upside potential than MYGA
  • Optional income riders for guaranteed lifetime income
  • Best for: growth + protection, retirement income

Multi-Year Guaranteed Annuity (MYGA)

  • Fixed interest rate for a set term (3, 5, 7 years)
  • Completely predictable — like a CD with tax deferral
  • Usually higher rates than bank CDs
  • No market exposure at all
  • Best for: conservative savers, near-term rollover parking

Rule of thumb: If you want predictability and simplicity, MYGA. If you want growth potential with protection, FIA. Many clients do both — split the money.

Should You Roll Your 401(k) Into an Annuity?

This is the most common question we get. The answer depends on your situation, but here's the framework:

The mistake people make is rolling 100% of their retirement into one product. We recommend a split strategy — some in annuity for guaranteed income, the rest in market-based accounts for growth. We run the numbers both ways before recommending anything.

The California Context

California has some of the highest state income tax rates in the country (up to 13.3%). That makes tax-deferred and tax-free growth strategies especially important for OC residents.

Annuities grow tax-deferred — you don't pay taxes on gains until you withdraw. Combined with a strategic withdrawal plan in retirement (pulling from taxable accounts first, then tax-deferred, then Roth), an annuity can help manage your lifetime tax bill significantly.

California's Insurance Guarantee Association also protects annuity contracts up to $250,000 per carrier — an additional safety net on top of the carrier's own financial strength.
